Holding Onto Hope Even When You Are Feeling Hopeless: How To Find Strength In God During Your Darkest Moments

Hopelessness. We’ve all been there. Whether it’s the weight of personal struggles, the loss of a loved one, or the pain of unmet expectations, there are times when life feels like an endless storm. When everything around you seems to be falling apart, holding onto hope can feel impossible. But what if we told you that there is a hope that never fades, even in the most hopeless of situations?

As Messianic Jewish believers, we understand that our faith is built on the promises of God—a God who is faithful even when life seems anything but. So, how do we hold onto hope when everything around us screams despair? In this article, we will explore how to hold onto hope in the midst of hopelessness, leaning on the strength of God’s Word and His unwavering faithfulness.

1. Hope Is Not Found in Our Circumstances

It’s easy to get caught up in our current circumstances and feel like there is no way out. But the Bible teaches us that true hope is not based on what we can see, but on who God is and His promises for our future.

In Isaiah 40:31, we are reminded that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength:

"But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

Even when it feels like we’re stuck in a hopeless situation, the promise is clear: if we wait on God and trust in His timing, He will renew our strength. Our hope is not rooted in the fleeting nature of our circumstances but in the eternal faithfulness of the Lord.

2. God Has a Plan for You, Even When You Can't See It

When we’re overwhelmed with feelings of hopelessness, it’s easy to believe that God has forgotten us or that He’s abandoned us in our pain. But the Bible teaches us that God has a plan for us, even when we can’t see it.

In Jeremiah 29:11, God promises that His plans for us are good:

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Even in the midst of trials and hardships, we can hold onto the hope that God has a purpose for our lives. His plans are filled with hope and a future, even when we feel lost or uncertain. God’s sovereignty ensures that our pain will not be in vain, but that He is working everything together for our good.

3. Our Hope Is in God’s Unfailing Love

When we are feeling hopeless, it’s easy to forget that God’s love for us is unshakable. His love is the foundation of our hope. No matter how dark the season may feel, we can always trust that God’s love for us remains steadfast.

In Psalm 42:11, the psalmist speaks to his soul in the midst of despair:

"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." (Psalm 42:11)

When we feel hopeless, it’s crucial to remind ourselves of the unchanging love of God. His love is the anchor for our souls, and it is through His love that we can find the strength to keep going. No matter how deep the pain, God’s love never fails.

4. Hope Is Found in God’s Promises

One of the most powerful ways to hold onto hope is by meditating on God’s promises. The Bible is filled with promises that remind us of God’s faithfulness, His provision, and His ability to make a way where there seems to be no way.

In Isaiah 43:2, God promises to be with us through our trials:

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you." (Isaiah 43:2)

This is a powerful reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, God is with us. He doesn’t promise that we won’t face trials, but He does promise that He will never leave us and that He will bring us through the storm.

5. Strengthen Your Hope through Prayer and Worship

In times of hopelessness, it’s essential to turn to God in prayer and worship. Prayer connects us to the heart of God and allows us to pour out our emotions, while worship reminds us of God’s greatness and faithfulness. Both can reignite our hope and remind us that God is in control.

In Isaiah 25:1, the prophet declares his trust in God’s faithfulness:

"O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure." (Isaiah 25:1)

When we lift our voices in worship and surrender our hopelessness to God, He renews our strength and restores our hope. Worship shifts our focus from our circumstances to the greatness of God, and through prayer, we invite God’s presence to intervene in our situation.

6. Hope Is a Choice, Even in the Midst of Pain

Choosing hope in the midst of pain is not always easy, but it is possible. Hope is not a passive feeling; it is an active decision to trust God, even when we can’t see the way forward.

In Isaiah 26:3, we are reminded that God keeps those who trust in Him in perfect peace:

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." (Isaiah 26:3)

When we choose to keep our minds focused on God and trust in His promises, He will give us peace, even in the most hopeless moments. Holding onto hope may be a struggle, but it is a choice that leads to peace and strength.

Conclusion: Holding onto Hope, No Matter What

No matter how hopeless your situation may seem, you can hold onto hope because of who God is. His promises are true, His love is unshakable, and His plans for you are good. By focusing on His faithfulness and trusting in His Word, you can rise above the despair and find strength in the midst of your trials.

Remember, hope is not based on your circumstances but on the unchanging nature of God. As you hold onto hope, you can be confident that God will renew your strength, guide you through your trials, and bring you to a place of peace and restoration.

If you're feeling hopeless today, take a moment to pray, meditate on God’s promises, and choose hope. You are not alone, and God is with you every step of the way.
